This was a wonderful week-long school trip I went on, back when St Petersburg was called Leningrad. We didn't get to see ordinary people a lot, shepherded around as we were by official Soviet "Inturist" guides. We did however try Russian ice cream (loved it), went to the circus, and saw a ballet at the Bolshoi, among other things.
